The Canadian Inuit or Canadian Inuit is a canine breed originating from Canada. It is also called qimmiq, also written quimmiq, an Inuit word designating a versatile working dog. Dating back at least 4,000 years, the breed enjoyed a certain international popularity at the end of the nineteenth century, before declining due to canine diseases imported and cross-breeding, the rise of snowmobiles and especially the massacre of thousands of dogs undertaken by Canadian authorities under the guise of

public safety, to the point of bringing about near-extinction. Indeed, from the 1950s to the 1970s, the Royal Canadian Gendarmerie and other government authorities shot thousands of sled dogs, without considering the central role of sled dogs in Inuit culture. In the 1970s, only 200 dogs of this breed remained: a rescue program was then launched, supported mainly by the Canadian government. Remaining rare, the Canadian Inuit is sometimes considered the only purely indigenous dog breed still existing in North America. Nunavut has made it its official animal.

Getting to know the Esquimau canadien

Character

Daily temperament

The character of the Canadian Inuit reflects its utility and environment of origin. It is loyal, courageous, intelligent and always on its guard. It is also affectionate, gentle, and develops a deep connection with its master, towards whom it is extremely loyal. As a sled dog, the breed was often expected to find its own food. Thus, many Canadian Inuit dogs have a more developed hunting instinct than other breeds. Thanks to their original environment, they love when it is cold and often prefer to sleep outdoors.
