The American Kennel Club has recognized the breed since 1994 and fixed the current standard, however the United Kennel Club recognized the breed before the American Kennel Club and there are no standard differences set by the two Kennels. The American Eskimo was recognized as a purebred dog in the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) since March 2006.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Esquimau américain

Origins & history

A story told

The American Eskimo results from crosses between the German Spitz (particularly the Wolfspitz) and the Japanese Spitz. This breed is not recognized by the International Cynological Federation (FCI).

Character

Daily temperament

The American Eskimo is a very expressive dog, with a tendency to bark, rather independent. Its temperament will depend partly on genetic factors inherent to the breed and partly on its training. It needs regular grooming, measured food and must be discouraged from barking.
