The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a spaniel dog breed originating from the mouth of the Somme, the Authie and the Canche in Picardy, which appeared during the 20th century. It descends from the French Spaniel with white and black coat and setters left in farms to avoid quarantine with Anglo-Saxon countries. It is considered a calm dog that requires a lot of exercise. It is especially affectionate with children. Similar to the Picardy Spaniel, it stands apart through the particular color of its coat.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Picardy Spaniel

Character

Daily temperament

It is a versatile hunting dog, interesting for its ability to locate and retrieve game in marshes or difficult terrain. It is not specialized in any particular terrain type. The Blue Picardy is a calm dog, but one that needs plenty of exercise to burn off energy. It loves to play, and is very obedient, making it a valued companion dog. It is particularly affectionate with children.

Physical

Breed standard

A Blue Picardy Spaniel measures between 56 and 64 cm at the withers for a weight of about 20 kg. Its coat is speckled with grey and black, giving it more or less blue highlights. The hairs are flat against the body, with some strands waving on the ears, paws, and under the tail. It has long legs similar to those of setters. Its muzzle is long and broad, and its large ears are covered with silky hair. Its chest is medium-sized and descends to the level of its elbows. The front and back of the animal are well-muscled. Its tail does not descend below the hock and is generally stiff. This breed has similarities with the Picardy Spaniel as they share a long common history. The main difference between these two breeds is the color of the coat, which is greyed and brown in the Picardy Spaniel when it is grey and black in the Blue Picardy Spaniel. This particular coloration is linked to the introduction of setter blood into the breed. Moreover, the Blue Picardy is somewhat faster and has a slightly finer muzzle.
