Chapter 1
Getting to know the Deerhound
Origins & history
A story told
This ancient breed, cited as early as the 3rd century AD, is a descendant of the Vertagus Hound or Celtic Hound. "The most perfect creature that is," this is how the Deerhound was described by poet Walter Scott (1771-1832).
Character
Daily temperament
It is a friendly, sociable, and very reliable sighthound. Obedient and very attached to its master, the Deerhound loves to please him. However, it is a true sighthound that has been selected over generations for pursuit. Therefore, most Deerhounds will be eager to hunt.
Physical
Breed standard
It is a rough-coated Sighthound of large size, which has a more robust build than the Greyhound but less substantial than the Irish Wolfhound.

Health
Health watch
The Scottish Deerhound lives approximately 9 to 13 years. The young dog has significant exercise needs to develop properly and remain in good health. This does not mean it needs a large house to live in, but it must have regular access to a space of freedom (enclosure) so it can let off steam.
