Getting to know the Cursinu
Origins & history
A story told
Writings and illustrations attest to the existence of the Corsican dog since at least the sixteenth century. The Cursinu was notably used as a herding dog by Corsicans until 1950, although the breed is known for its versatility. The numbers of the breed declined during the twentieth century before a resurgence of interest during the 1980s. The association for the protection of the Corsican dog was created in 1989 (it became the Cursinu Club in 2004). The Kennel Club recognized the breed in 2003.
Character
Daily temperament
The Cursinu is docile, faithful, proud, and very attached to its master. On the other hand, it is wary of strangers. Intelligent, calm, and balanced, capable of adapting to many situations, it overflows with energy and liveliness when in action.
Physical
Breed standard
The Cursinu is a rustic country dog, robust, with a powerful appearance and without heaviness. The gait is supple, the gallop short, jerky, and bouncy. The limbs are strongly muscled. The nose is wide, open, and black in color. The eyes are oval and slightly oblique in color ranging from hazelnut to dark brown. The ears of triangular shape are semi-drooping or drooping. The tail is fluffy, drooping or curled at rest, curled in action. The coat is well-filled, short or medium-long. The most common coat is fawn brindle, with limited patches admitted at the chest and extremities of the limbs.
