Chapter 1

Getting to know the Cocker américain

Origins & history

A story told

In 1878, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Cocker Spaniel. In 1881, the Cocker Chloé II was imported to the United States, pregnant with Obo. A few weeks later she gave birth to two puppies: Miss Obo II and Obo II. This lineage becomes the basis of the American Cocker and gradually distinguishes itself from its English cousin. Having gradually noticed that this hypertype had completely distinguished American Cockers from other subjects, it was decided to split the Cocker into two breeds, the English (original type) and the American (hypertypic) so as not to disadvantage the old type. It became highly appreciated by American households, until becoming a "star" in Disney's animated film Lady and the Tramp. Its popularity in the United States is currently less strong than before, surpassed by Retrievers. It was in 1956 that American Cockers made their first return to France. In 1958, the first breeders arrived. They had to make their place alongside the English Cocker, very established in European customs. In 2002: 767 puppies born with pedigree in France and a small twenty in Switzerland. Versus 4,481 English Cockers for France and approximately 200 in Switzerland. In 2015: 410 puppies born with LOF registration, and 131 confirmations. (5,085 English Cockers and 1,011 confirmations).

Character

Daily temperament

Like his cousin the English Cocker Spaniel, the American Cocker is very playful, smart and affectionate but can also show a lot of character. It is very attached to its master.

Maintenance

Daily care

The selection of Americans on the coat of the breed has given a dog whose coat must be groomed. This grooming is essential, as well as very regular brushing, to avoid any problems. Indeed, some American Cockers end up at the veterinarian to be completely shaved as much as the coat has become tangled due to lack of maintenance. Like the English Cocker, the ear canal of the American Cocker must be frequently cleaned and the inside of the ear shaved to avoid maceration and ear infections. Moreover, the eyes of the Cocker are fragile. Daily cleaning of them will prevent serious infections of their tear ducts which could lead to their removal.
