Chapter 1
Getting to know the Cockapoo
Origins & history
A story told
The first Cockapoos appeared in the United States in the 1950s as a result of accidental breedings, although similar dogs existed in France in the early 1800s. The name of the animal is derived from a contraction of the words cocker (spaniel) and poodle: cocker and poodle → cock' a' poo' → cockapoo
Character
Daily temperament
The Cockapoo is an energetic and friendly dog. It is an intelligent dog that learns quickly and can easily become bored. Sensitive, it needs to be in a positive environment. It needs to be socialized with other dogs from a young age. A study published on Plos One in 2026 showed that the Cockapoo has the most undesirable character of mixed breeds and the furthest from the breeds from which it is a cross. Among these undesirable behaviors are aggression toward its owners and strangers, excitability and fear, rivalry with other dogs, and separation anxiety.
Physical
Breed standard
Depending on the type of Poodle (miniature, medium, or giant) and the breed of Cocker (American or English) used for crossing, the size of the Cockapoo can vary (toy, mini, or standard) as can its weight. The latter is thus between 3 and 11 kg. The coat can be of various colors, solid as well as bicolor, in the manner of Poodles. The hair is dense, can be straight and smooth or curly. Some Cockapoos do not shed their hair, but this depends on individuals and lineages.

These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.
Health
Health watch
The Cockapoo is more prone to progressive retinal atrophy, which appears in adulthood and also affects Cockers and Poodles. It is also more exposed to congenital patellar luxation, common in small dogs, which appears around four to five months of age.
