Origins & history
A story told
The Uruguayan Cimarron descends from dogs abandoned by Spanish and Portuguese conquerors in Uruguay. They probably descend from the Alano and sighthound. A natural breed, the Cimarron is a dog that returned to the wild and adapted to the living conditions in Uruguay. The brindled coat would have developed as camouflage in Uruguayan biotopes. The Uruguayans domesticated and used these wild dogs as guard dogs and shepherd dogs. The Uruguayan Cimarron was first presented at a dog show sponsored by the Uruguayan Kennel Club (KCU) in 1989. The Society of Uruguayan Cimarron Breeders (Sociedad de Criadores de Cimarrón Uruguayo (SCCU)) was founded in 1988 to promote breeding of the breed and the breed was officially recognized a year later by the KCU and the Rural Association of Uruguay. The Uruguayan Cimarron is permanently recognized by the International Cynological Federation on November 7, 2017, after its provisional acceptance in 2006 by the FCI and by the French Central Canine Society (SCC) in 2011. In 2012, 16 registrations were made in the French Book of Origins (LOF), placing the Uruguayan Cimarron as a rare breed in France.
Character
Daily temperament
The Uruguayan Cimarron is described in the FCI standard as balanced, intelligent and courageous. Its natural instinct of protection makes it an excellent guard dog. It is a balanced mastiff, confident in itself and confident in its strength. But above all, thanks to its excellent balance it is an extraordinary family companion. The Cimarron is a dog that adapts easily as long as given the affection and activity it needs. It is not a destructive dog and is relatively quickly housebroken. It is playful and very demanding, it is not an independent dog but curious and clingy.
Physical
Breed standard
The Uruguayan Cimarron is a medium-sized dog of molossoid type. Strong and compact, it has good bone structure and flexible musculature. Of medium attachment, the tail is thick and reaches the hock. At rest, it is carried low, while in action, rather horizontal or slightly raised upward. The stop is moderately marked. The muzzle is powerful, slightly shorter than the skull. Medium-sized eyes are almond-shaped and brown, preferably dark. Medium-sized ears are triangular in shape, drooping without being fitted against the cheeks. When legislation allows, the ears can be cropped to give a round shape, resembling puma ears, without ever amputating more than half of the total ear length. The coat is short, smooth, well-laid on the body, with undercoat. The coat is brindled or fawn in all its shades, with or without mask on the face. Fawn coat can be grizzled. White markings are allowed in small quantities on the lower jaw, lower face, chest, belly and lower limbs.
