Chapter 1
Getting to know the Thai Ridgeback
Origins & history
A story told
The first archaeological documents making it possible to attest the presence of a Thai Ridgeback date from the 17th century. It was used for hunting, to escort chariots and also as a guard dog in the eastern part of Thailand. The difficulty of access to Eastern Thailand made it possible to limit foreign blood contributions and preserve the original type of the breed.
Character
Daily temperament
The Thai Ridgeback is described as hardy, active, loyal to its family and gifted for jumping in the FCI standard. It is of good company.
Physical
Breed standard
The Thai Ridgeback is a medium to large-sized dog with well-developed musculature, its weight is on average 25 kg. The length of the body is slightly greater than the height at the withers. Medium-sized eyes are almond-shaped, dark brown in color (amber eyes are accepted for blue coats only). The ears are triangular, of average size, inclined forward and well-erect. Thick at the base, the tail tapers to the end, which can reach the hock joint. It is carried vertically and slightly curved. The coat is short and smooth. The dorsal ridge is formed by hairs that grow in reverse direction to the rest of the pelage, with clearly defined limits. The presence of a ridge is specific to this breed. The shape and length of the ridge may differ from one subject to another, but it must be symmetrical on each side of the spine and not exceed the width of the back. Shields ('hair crowns') or tufts ('hair whirlpools') are admitted at the front of the ridge. The coat colors are red, black, blue and very light fawn. A black mask is preferable in reds.
