Catahoula Leopard Dog

The origins of the Catahoula are poorly defined, but it appears that domestic dogs raised by Native Americans were introduced to North America by Spanish explorers who crossed them with bloodhounds, sighthounds and mastiffs. Later, animals resulting from these crosses were bred with dogs that accompanied French immigrants arriving in Louisiana such as the Beauceron.

The coat of this dog is spotted (hence its name "leopard") and blue-gray in color with black, red or yellow patches. Animals with blue eyes are particularly appreciated. The male can measure between 55 and 63 centimeters at the shoulder and weigh 27 to 36 kilos. The female, on the other hand, is smaller (55 to 58) and weighs less (31 kilos maximum). It can be used for hunting and herding of sheep or pigs over vast territories.
