Chapter 1
Getting to know the Belgian Mastiff
Origins & history
A story told
Its standard and breeding register were created in 1908. The decline of the breed began during World War I: the dogs were introduced into the Belgian army and used as draft animals, notably for machine guns. Mechanization rendered canine traction obsolete, so numbers gradually decreased. However, a few specimens were still alive between 1960 and 1970. Attempts to reconstruct the breed are currently underway in Belgium.
Physical
Breed standard
The Belgian Draught Dog was a large dog of mastiff type that was used both as a draft dog and as a guard. It was appreciated for its gentle character and good obedience. Its coat was short and smooth, its colour fawn, brindle, sometimes sprinkled with white patches and having a black mask. It had a large head with a broad muzzle and half-pendulous ears.
