The Taymyr Dog (Taymyrskaya ezdovaya) is a primitive dog breed originating from the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia. One of the ancestors of the Samoyed, the breed is notably raised for reindeer herding, hunting and sledding. It is a very ancient breed recognized in its country of origin, but not by the International Cynological Federation. It is part, together with the Nenets Laika and the Chukchi dog (ancestor of the Husky) of rare sledding breeds brought to Europe by Gilles Elkaim at the end of hi

Chapter 1
Getting to know the Taymyr Laika
Origins & history
A story told
The history of the Taymyr dog is linked to that of the Dolgan and Nganaasan peoples, both nomadic or semi-nomadic. They raise this breed for sled traction, their thick fur for the making of clothes, the guarding and protection of reindeer against wolves and bears, but also hunting, the Dolgans being merchants of mammoth tusks.

It is estimated to be one of the oldest dog breeds. Furthermore, the discovery in the Taymyr Peninsula of a semi-domesticated dog's jaw dating from 35,000 years shows a very ancient presence of man and dog in this region. During his voyage to the Taymyr Peninsula, Marco Polo mentions "dogs as tall as small donkeys." Indeed this dog is selected differently depending on the geographical area, some lineages can reach an impressive size. Its spread to Europe is very recent, it was during his great journey across all of Russia that Gilles Elkaim was able to use and then bring some individuals back to Finnish Laponia in 2004. He made a second journey shortly after to enlarge his herd and ensure genetic diversity to start a conservation breeding program. Today the Taymyr dog is found in a few kennels, but the majority remains concentrated in one kennel in Finnish Laponia. A breeding program with the Samoyed breed is currently underway to improve the hardiness of the latter.
Character
Daily temperament
The Taymyr dog also possesses multiple character traits that explain its great versatility. Generally speaking, the Taymyr is a good guardian and devoted to its master. It is an intelligent dog that loves to learn, it can nevertheless be stubborn like most primitive breeds.

In comparison with other sledding breeds, it is very close to humans and not a wanderer, indeed it was not uncommon to observe the presence of dogs in homes, and some dogs even played the role of child guardians.
Physical
Breed standard
Not being recognized by the FCI, the breed has not been physically selected and standardized. However, it can be described by its main traits.

A stocky but athletic build. A well-descended and deep chest. Medium to long hair, well-supplied on the hindquarters and neck. A long and thick muzzle that is not pointed. Triangular ears implanted high on the skull, may be drooping. The tail, well-tufted, is implanted high and mostly crescent-shaped, and can curl over the back. As for hair composition, it is very different from that of the Husky or Greenland dog which have a coat that is mostly "polar," it is composed of two layers. A fairly long one acting as a wind breaker, the second denser taking up the "polar" type. The hair is soft and silky. The most represented coats are white, black, brown and bi or tricolored (brown and white or black and white), however all types of coats are found. As for size, as stated above, size and weight vary greatly depending on lineages. But the Taymyr remains an imposing and very powerful dog. The following size range at the withers and weight can be estimated: 50 to 70 cm for females for 25 to 40kg 60 to 80 cm for males for 30 to 60kg
Note that the lineages present in Europe are relatively small compared to some Russian lineages.
