Chapter 1

Getting to know the Hanover Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Hanover Red Dog finds its origins in the nineteenth century in Saxony when a gamekeeper of Hanover began the selection of a bloodhound, that is to say a hunting dog specialized in the search for wounded game. He made crosses between the lines of the 'old German running hounds' and a dog breed now extinct, the haidbracke, a running dog of the German plains. As a matter of fact, these rare dogs were practically reserved and used in the Jägerhöfe, true hunting institutions created in Germany in the eighteenth century, whose objective was the training of professional hunters attached to the princely courts of the time. The most famous of these hunting schools for the quality of teaching provided (breeding and maintenance of hunting dogs, horses, etc.) was undoubtedly the Jägerhof of the former kingdom of Hanover where the art of wounded game search developed.

Character

Daily temperament

The standard of the International Canine Federation describes the breed as calm and balanced, very attached to its master, distant with strangers. Education must be conducted with firmness and gentleness from the youngest age.

Physical

Breed standard

The Hanover Red Dog is a medium-sized hunting dog, robust and powerful in appearance. The members are muscular, the chest is deep. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Long, slightly curved, the tail is set high. Strong at the base, it tapers progressively to the end. The head is wide, with widely protruding lips and often a furrowed forehead. Of medium length, the ears are attached high and wide, hanging flat, tight against the head, and end in a slight rounding. The eyes are dark brown. The coat is short, thick, hard almost rough. The coat is red-deer color more or less dark, with a black mask at the head. The coat can be brindled and have small white spots on the chest.
