It is a hunting dog specially trained to follow the trail of the wounded animal over several kilometers, several hours after the shot, endowed with a good sense of smell and stubborn character. In France, the most commonly used breeds are the Dachshund, the Bavarian Mountain Scenthound, the Hanoverian Scenthound, the Alpine Basset, and also the Labrador. It should be noted that non-registered and mixed dogs can also be equipped with these abilities and develop very good performance in blood tracking.

Breed standard
Regardless of the type of hunting, a hunter may sometimes wound game instead of killing it. Blood tracking consists of doing everything possible to find the wounded animal and finish it or recover its remains. It is an ethical activity that every responsible hunter should undertake. However, many wounded animals are permanently lost and according to the National Association of big game hunters, 10 to 20% of animals shot are wounded and are not or poorly searched for. The activity of blood tracking originated in Eastern Europe and developed in France in the 1980s. Several associations exist in France and train handlers and their auxiliaries for their approval. The main ones are the UNUCR (National Union for the Use of the Red Dog) and the ARGGB (Association for the Search of Wounded Big Game). Other associations are present in a more local way (often resulting from splits of the 2 national associations), we can mention among others the AMRS (Moselle Association for Blood Tracking), AGRS (Gard Association for Blood Tracking)... In Wallonia, an association fulfills similar duties, the Belgian Association for the Use of Blood Dog (ABUCS).
