Getting to know the Canary Warren Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Canarian Rabbit Dog is present on all the islands, and notably on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The breed is of Egyptian origin and may have been imported to the Canary Islands during Antiquity by the Amazighs, the indigenous people of North Africa. Several Egyptian engravings, statues or reliefs would represent the Canarian Rabbit Dog according to the breed standard.

Character

Daily temperament

The Canarian Rabbit Dog is described as courageous, nervous, restless and extremely dynamic by the breed standard. It is very attached to its master and endowed with excellent endurance.

Physical

Breed standard

It is a medium-sized dog, longilinear, slender, light and extremely resistant. The skeleton is well developed. The musculature is very developed, dry. The absence of a fat layer allows the rib cage, spine and hip bones to be discerned. The head is elongated, cone-shaped. The eyes of small size are oblique, almond-shaped. The color is amber more or less dark in accordance with the coat color. The ears are quite large, triangular. The tail appears as an extension of the croup. It is carried hanging, or raised in a sickle shape, never curled. The tip is somewhat tapered and usually white. The coat is smooth, short and tight preferably red and white, the red being more or less intense, ranging from orange to dark mahogany red.
