These are most often mixed-breed dogs, as well as dogs corresponding to the breeds of group 9 of the FCI nomenclature, but they can also belong to other groups (for example, the Beagle or the Labrador, although hunting dogs, are prized as pets). The classification into companion and utility dogs is systematized for the first time by John Caius in his De Canibus Britannicis in 1570.
