Getting to know the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog

Origins & history

A story told

This breed has been selected for centuries based on the primary criterion of utility. It has retained this character intact to the present day. The first standard was drawn up in 1934. It was later adapted to meet the conditions of the International Cynological Federation in 2002. The breed is accepted provisionally in 2005. Outside its country of origin, the Carpathian Shepherd Dog is extremely rare. The breed club in France is the Club of East and Italian Shepherd Dogs (CBEI).

The Carpathian Shepherd Dog is described in the FCI standard as an innate and courageous guardian. It has an instinctive and unconditional attachment to its master and the flocks. It is a dog with calm, dignified and balanced behavior.

Physical

Breed standard

The Carpathian Shepherd Dog is a large shepherd dog, of vigorous appearance without being heavy. Males are taller and stronger than females. The body is vigorous and well developed. It fits slightly in a rectangle. Attached high, the tail reaches the tip of the hock and is provided with abundant hair. At rest, it is carried hanging, and when alert, raised in a sickle. The gaits are harmonious, supple and well coordinated. The preferred gait is the trot and the gallop is sustained and balanced. The head is strong but not heavy. The stop is not too pronounced. The nose is always black. Eyes of medium size are arranged in an almond shape, brown in color. Attached relatively high, the ears are triangular in shape and hang well pressed to the cheeks. The coat is of harsh texture, straight and dense. The undercoat is dense and supple, of light color. The coat is a sable charred color (grizzle). The skin is pigmented with ashen color.
