Chapter 1

Getting to know the Karelian Bear Dog

Origins & history

A story told

The Karelian Bear Dog is considered a descendant of the Komi or Zyrians dog. The birthplace of the breed is in Karelia, a region located on the border between Finland and Russia. Dogs are historically used for hunting. Breeding began in 1936 with the goal of creating a robust dog that barks well on the trail of large game. The first standard was drafted in 1945. The first dogs were registered in the stud book from 1946. Today, this breed is widespread in Finland.

Character

Daily temperament

The Karelian Bear Dog has a strong predatory instinct, because of its origins as a hunting dog. It can be a barker, whether in hunting or in the yard. It is a balanced, persevering, courageous, sometimes very determined dog, and very independent. Very confident, it can be distant with other dogs (or frankly reactive if it hasn't had good socialization and/or too many bad encounters) but never with humans.

Physical

Breed standard
