Origins & history
A story told
In the Viste cave on the Jæren peninsula, archaeological excavations uncovered four dog skeletons dated between 5000 and 4000 BC. According to Prof. Brinchmann of the Bergen Museum, these dogs would be of elkhound type and thus represent the oldest evidence of this type of dog in Norway. Furthermore, Norwegian elkhounds appear in numerous Viking sagas. The Norwegian Black Elkhound was selected for centuries in rural areas of Norway by farmers, hunters and shepherds to serve as a guard dog, shepherd dog and hunting dog for large game (moose, reindeer and bears). The breed adapted to the harsh Norwegian climate. In 1877, the Norwegian Hunters Association organized its first dog show, where elkhounds were represented. Quickly, the first studbook and standard were established in Norway. Interest in this breed extended to England where the British Elkhound Society was founded in 1923. In the 1930s, the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America was created.

Physical
Breed standard
The Norwegian Black Elkhound is a typical spitz of medium size, light, with a short and compact body that can fit in a square. The neck is muscular and athletic. Attached high, the short and thick tail is supplied with thick and tight hair, but without plume; it is carried rolled over the back, but not carried on the side. The head is wedge-shaped. The eyes are preferably dark brown, the look is energetic and without fear. Placed high, straight, the ears are pointed and very mobile, slightly longer than wide. The coat is dense, but not bristly. The top coat is rough, well laid on the body. It is shorter on the head and front of the limbs. The undercoat is soft, woolly and black. The only accepted color is brilliant black. A little white on the chest, front limbs and feet may be tolerated.
