Origins & history
A story told
The ancestral type of the Frisian water dog was developed 400 years ago in the Dutch province of Friesland. It was probably created by crossing a Romany dog and a Frisian dog, probably the Old Water Dog (now extinct breed). The Frisian water dog was preserved for the difficult and dangerous hunting of the Mustela putorius (polecat) and the Otter. They are also used for hunting waterfowl and as guard dogs. During World War II, the breed nearly disappeared, but it was able to be saved and the Frisian water dog is becoming increasingly popular. A database is maintained by the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stabij-en Wetterhounen to understand pedigrees. Internationally, the International Cynological Federation has recognized the breed and placed it in the water dogs section group 8. The United Kennel Club recognizes the breed in the Gundog Group. It is considered a rare species.
Character
Daily temperament
This breed produces an excellent hunting dog. The International Cynological Federation describes the temperament of the breed as reserved and "an ideal guard dog" but never aggressive.
Physical
Breed standard
The Frisian water dog has a medium size between 55 and 59 centimeters at the shoulder. It weighs between 25 and 35 kilos. Its coat is thick and curly except for the head, ears and legs. Its coat can be black, white or brown as well as these three colors mixed. The texture of the coat is not woolly because otherwise the fur would not resist water. The ears are low and rest on the head. The tail curves strongly over the back. The breed has an unusual dark expression because of the shape of the eyes that marks its difference from other dog breeds.
