Getting to know the Frisian Pointer

Origins & history

A story told

The Frisian Pointing Dog descends from Dutch native dogs whose exact origins are unknown. Outside the Netherlands, this breed is very little known.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Frisian Pointing Dog as faithful, gentle and docile, intelligent, calm, obedient, easy to train, vigilant. It is never false or aggressive.

Physical

Breed standard

The Frisian Pointing Dog is a medium-sized spaniel, built powerfully. The body fits in a rectangle. The tail reaches to the hock point and is not set high. The eye, round in shape and medium in size, is dark brown in subjects with a black-based coat and brown in subjects with a brown or orange-based coat. Set fairly low, the ears are shaped like a trowel. The ear hair is characteristic of the breed: it is quite long near the base and gradually shortens toward the bottom, while the lower third is only covered with short hair. The skin is tight without dewlap. The long coat is straight and smooth. It may be slightly wavy on the croup but never curly. The coat is short on the head. The coat behind the front legs and on the hindquarters is abundant and thick, bushier than fringed. Coat colors are black, brown or orange with white markings. Ticking and mixed hair are admitted in the white markings.
