Getting to know the Creole Dog
Origins & history
A story told
The history of the Creole dog is ancient. Resulting from numerous crosses between stray animals, it was eventually trained in the 17th century to monitor and catch slaves on several Caribbean islands: Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint-Martin. The breed is not recognized by the International Cynological Federation (FCI), despite attempts for official recognition.

Breed standard
It is a medium-sized dog of shepherd type. It weighs between 10 and 20 kg and measures less than 50 cm. Its coat is sandy, black, or brown with a black muzzle. Its ears are often drooping. Well adapted to the Caribbean climate, it is resistant to tropical diseases but is susceptible to spirocercosis, a disease caused by parasitic worms, fatal to the dog. Affectionate and mischievous in nature, it is a dog that needs large spaces.
