Chapter 1

Getting to know the Slovak Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Slovak Hound is an indigenous breed of Slovakia whose exact origins are unknown but probably date back centuries. The Slovenský Kopov is descended from crosses between indigenous dogs and imported dog breeds, resulting in a robust and versatile dog. The breed was recognized by the International Canine Federation after World War II.

Physical

Breed standard

The Slovak Hound is a medium-sized dog with solid bone structure. The light build body is inscribed in an elongated rectangle. Attached lower than the line of the back, the strong tail ends in a point. It reaches the hock and is carried pendant at rest and in saber, with an inclination of 150°, on alert. The skull of rectangular oblong shape is slightly rounded in its upper part. The eyebrows and frontal groove are well marked while the occipital prominence is little accentuated. The lines of the muzzle and skull are parallel. The eyes are dark and almond-shaped. Attached slightly below the line of the eye, the ears of medium length are rounded at their tip and fall flat against the head. The coat of two to five centimetres length is of average thickness, well-fitted, dense with a dense undercoat especially in winter. It is longer on the back, neck and tail. The coat is black and tan. The intensity of tan markings varies from brown to mahogany.
