Getting to know the Serbian Hound
Origins & history
A story told
The origin of the breed is said to be a group of hunting hounds widespread in the Balkans that themselves descended from hunting hounds of Asia Minor. Franz Laska is the first to describe a Serbian hunting dog under the name "Balkan Hound" in 1905. The first standard is written in 1924 and the International Canine Federation (FCI) recognizes the breed on May 14, 1940 in Bled. The Yugoslav Canine Association controls breeding and manages registration in the official register of origins. On November 12, 1996, the FCI General Committee officially ratified the name change to "Serbian Hound" under the proposal of the Yugoslav Canine Association.
Character
Daily temperament
The Serbian Hound is described in the FCI standard as full of temperament, lively, friendly, self-assured and tenacious. It is not recommended for apartment living.
Physical
Breed standard
The Serbian Hound is a medium-sized hunting hound with robust build. Strong at the attachment, the tail that extends the line of the croup tapers gradually to its tip. Slightly curved upward, it is carried below the line of the back. The head is dolichocephalic and the upper lines of the skull and muzzle are divergent. Of medium size, the oval-shaped eyes are as dark as possible. Attached high, of medium length and width, the ears are drooping, well fitted to the cheeks. Their tip is of a shape reminiscent of an oval. The hair is short, abundant, shiny, quite thick and well-laid all over the body with undercoat. It is slightly longer on the posterior edge of the thighs and on the underside of the tail. The coat color is red and black. The red, called "fox color" varies from yellowish red to rust. The black areas spread in a mantle or saddle and extend up to the head which has black markings on both sides of the temples. On the chest, a round white mark is admitted if it does not exceed two centimeters in diameter.
