Getting to know the Hellenic Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Greek Hound is a dog breed indigenous to Greece of probably very ancient origin although poorly determined. The breed may be related to the Italian Hound.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard does not give typical temperament or character of the breed. In the family, it is a very gentle dog, affectionate and appreciating children. It is an active and resistant dog.

Physical

Breed standard

The Greek Hound is a medium-sized dog, giving an impression of strength and vigor. Attached rather high, the tail is thick at the root and diminishes slightly towards its end. It reaches the point of the hock and is carried in the shape of a saber. The long head presents upper lines of the skull and muzzle that are divergent. The skull is slightly flat, with a little salient occipital protuberance. The forehead is quite wide, with a slightly marked mediofrontal groove. The stop is slightly pronounced. The eyes of normal size are brown in color. Of medium length, the flat ears are rounded at the lower end. Attached above the zygomatic arch, they are rounded at the end. The coat is short, dense, somewhat hard, well-united and adhering to the body. The coat is black and tan. A small white spot on the chest is tolerated.
