Getting to know the Finnish Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Finnish Hound has been known since the 18th century. The development of the Finnish Hound began after the creation of the Finnish Kennel Club in 1889. The first standard was written in 1932. This breed is fairly well known and appreciated in Finland, but remains unknown outside its country of origin.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Finnish Hound as calm, energetic and friendly, never aggressive. It is a dog that loves children and has a cheerful temperament.

Physical

Breed standard

The Finnish Hound is a medium-sized dog with a strong appearance without being heavy. The topline is horizontal. The body length significantly exceeds the height at the withers. Attached low, the tail is slightly curved and reaches the hocks. Strong at the base, the tail tapers to its end. The eyes of medium size are dark brown in colour. The ears are pendulous, with the front edge well against the head. The outer coat is of medium length, well-laid, straight, tight and rather harsh. The undercoat is short, tight and soft in texture. The coat is tricolour. Black extends in a mantle. The tan is intense and extends over the head, the lower parts of the body, the shoulders, the thighs and also other areas on the limbs. The white is usually on the head, neck, chest, on the lower part of the limbs and at the end of the tail.
