Getting to know the Spanish Hound
Origins & history
A story told
Known since the Middle Ages, the Spanish Hound is described in the Book of Hunting by King Alphonse XI of Castile (1311-1350) and in other writings such as those of Gonzalo Argote de Molina (1582). Fairly little known in France, it is appreciated and widespread in Spain.
Character
Daily temperament
The FCI standard of the breed describes the Spanish Hound as affectionate and calm, courageous and valiant when hunting.
Physical
Breed standard
The Spanish Hound is a medium-sized hound dog, of longilinear type. The length of its body far exceeds the height at the withers. The skeleton is compact and the limbs are solid. Large at the root, the tail is attached at medium height. At rest, it is carried slightly curved and exceeds the hock. In action, it is carried in saber position, with a continuous lateral swinging motion back and forth. The long head is equipped with a domed skull with marked occipital crest and a gentle slope. The skull and muzzle lines are divergent. Eyes of medium size are almond-shaped and dark hazel in color. The ears are large, long and drooping, of supple texture, rectangular in shape, with the extremity rounded. The coat is tight, short, fine and laid. It forms a brush at the tail tip. The coat is white and orange. The markings are distributed in irregular, well-defined patches without speckling. The orange color varies from lemon to sustained reddish-brown.
