Chapter 1
Getting to know the Schiller Hound
Origins & history
A story told
In 1886, among the 189 scent hounds presented at the first Swedish dog show, the male Ralla and his sister Tamburini, belonging to farmer Per Schiller, are considered the founders of the breed. They descended from hunting dogs of the Kaflås estate, but likely came from Southern Germany. They are subsequently crossed with British hunting dogs, notably the harrier, and Swiss hunting dogs. The Schiller Hound is recognized as a breed by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1907. The breed is fairly common in Sweden but is rare in other countries.
Character
Daily temperament
The FCI standard describes the Schiller Hound as lively and attentive. It is strongly discouraged to make it live in an apartment.
Physical
Breed standard
The Schiller Hound is a medium-sized, well-proportioned scent hound, with a swift and strong bearing. The tail is straight or slightly saber-like. Wide at its base, it tapers toward its tip and reaches the hock in length. Rather long, the tail is triangular in shape from front and side. The eyes are dark brown in color. Set high, the ears hang flat and their anterior edge rests closely on the cheek. Pulled forward, they do not reach the mid-length of the muzzle. The coat is rough, not too short, lying well on the body. On the head, ears and front of the limbs, the coat is short and smooth. It can be longer under the tail and on the posterior surface of the thighs. It is fawn colored with a well-defined black mantle covering the back and sides of the neck, descending on the sides of the trunk and on the upper surface of the tail. Light white markings on the chest and toes are allowed.
