Hygen Hound

The selection of the breed is carried out in Norway in the late nineteenth century by crossing Swiss scent hounds such as the Argovian and German scent hounds. The founder of the breed, Hygen, gave it his name. The breed is very little known, even in its country of origin outside of which it is almost impossible to obtain this breed.

The FCI standard does not give typical temperament or character of the breed. It is tenacious, enduring and careful about work well done in hunting, very gentle and calm at home.

The Hygen Hound is a medium-sized scent hound, of solid and compact appearance. The body is inscribed in a rectangle, with a firm top line. Strong at the base, its tail tapers toward its end. Carried straight or slightly curved upward, it reaches the hock. Of medium height and length, the moderately wide head without being heavy has the shape of a wedge. The medium-sized eyes are dark brown. Attached at medium height, neither wide nor long, the ears taper and round at their end. Attached at medium height, they fall fairly spread against the cheeks and reach half the nose if folded forward. The coat is straight and preferably harsh to the touch, dense, glossy and not too short. The posterior face of the thighs and tail may have slightly more abundant hair. The standard admits three coat colors: red-brown (brown) or yellow-red, often charred on the head, back and tail root, with or without white markings, black and tan with or without white markings and white speckled with red-brown (brown) or yellow-red or with black and tan markings.
