Chapter 1

Getting to know the Hamilton Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Hamilton Hound is the result of various crosses between scent hounds from southern Germany and Switzerland, English Foxhounds and Harriers. In 1886, among the 189 scent hounds presented at the first Swedish dog show, the male Pang and the female Stella, belonging to Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton, are considered the founders of the breed. Initially called Swedish Hound, the breed is renamed Hamilton Hound in 1921.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Hamilton Hound as friendly and even-tempered. The breed is considered fairly independent, but also gentle and affectionate with its family.

Physical

Breed standard

The Hamilton Hound is a medium-sized dog, well proportioned, giving an impression of strength and vigor. The body is inscribed in a rectangle. Sexual dimorphism is marked. Attached in the line of the back, the tail is carried straight or slightly curved in a saber. Fairly wide at the root, it tapers toward its tip and reaches the hock. The rather long head has a slightly domed skull of moderate width and a well-defined stop, without being too pronounced. The eyes are dark brown. Set quite high, the ears do not reach mid-length of the muzzle when pulled forward. When the dog is alert, they only rise slightly. The coat is harsh, not too short, well laid against the body. On the head, ears and front of the limbs, the coat is smooth and very short. It is rather long on the underside of the tail and the back of the thighs, without forming fringes. The coat is tricolor. The top of the neck, the sides of the trunk and the upper side of the tail are black. The head, ears, limbs, lateral faces of the neck, trunk and tail are fawn-colored. The fawn can vary from a gold tone to an intense and deep reddish-brown. White is distributed as a white stripe on the muzzle, on the upper and lower faces of the neck, on the chest, at the tip of the tail and at the bottom of the limbs and on the feet.
