Chapter 1

Getting to know the Halden Hound

Origins & history

A story told

Selection of the breed was initiated by Hans Larsen Bisseberg, a farmer from Østfold county, in 1860. Harriers, foxhounds and beagles were probably used to create the breed. Several names were given to the breed: Bisseberghund in honor of the breed's creator, Ankerstøver and finally Haldenstøver, which appeared in 1938. The breed is rare, even in Norway where the Norwegian Hound and the Hygen Hound are more well-known.

Physical

Breed standard

The Halden Hound is a medium-sized hunting dog, fitting into a rectangle, with a strong but not heavy build. Carried rather low, the rather thick tail reaches approximately to the hock. The head is dry, medium-sized, well-balanced. The eyes are dark brown and medium-sized. The ears are folded forward and reach the middle of the muzzle. The coat is rough, very tight and straight, with a thick undercoat. The coat is white marked with black with fawn patches shaded on the head, legs and sometimes at the border between white and black.
