Getting to know the Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The breed was registered by the International Cynological Federation on June 19, 1965 under the name Illyrian Hound. The breed name was subsequently changed to Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound or Barak. The breed is virtually unknown outside of the former Yugoslavia.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the breed as lively, courageous and persevering. As a family dog, it is friendly and affectionate, even with children.

Physical

Breed standard

The Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound is a medium-sized hound with robust construction. The tail, thicker at its base, tapers towards its tip. It reaches the hock or extends slightly beyond and is carried in a slightly upward saber-like curve. The long and moderately wide head has a straight muzzle, a soft stop and a rectangular muzzle. Pronounced and bushy eyebrows surmount the large eyes of chestnut color and oval shape. Implanted at medium height, the broad ears of medium length are pendulous. Somewhat thick, they taper and round at their ends. The coat is long, hard, shaggy and unkempt, with abundant undercoat. The coat admits several colors that can be combined in tricolor or bicolor. The base color is yellow-red or gray-earth. White markings are present on the head forming a star or stripe, under the throat, under the neck, on the chest, under the underside of the limbs and at the tip of the tail.
