A hunting dog is a hunting dog whose function is to pursue or catch game. It is different from a pointer dog which indicates to the hunter the presence of game, and from a retriever dog which retrieves the game. Among hunting dogs, a distinction is made between those that hunt by sight, fast dogs of sighthound type from FCI group 10, and those that hunt by smell, whose sense of smell is particularly keen (corresponding to FCI group 6).
