Health

Health watch

Due to their flat muzzles, Pugs are subject to brachycephalic syndrome, a set of respiratory disorders as a result of their crushed face, which may require surgery. A prevalence study of diseases in Pugs conducted in the United Kingdom shows that Pugs seen in consultation presented 16.25% with eye conditions, 15.60% with skin conditions and 15.06% with ear conditions.

Among the most represented conditions are obesity and overweight (13.18%), corneal conditions (8.72%), external otitis (7.53%) and other ear conditions (7.4%). Brachycephalic syndrome affected 5.15% of the population studied. More than a third of Pugs present an inflammatory-type pathophysiological process. The most affected area is the head and neck, followed by the abdomen, thorax then limbs. Since the muzzle has many folds and wrinkles, the Pug is also faced with pyodermatitis of the facial fold. Its average life expectancy at birth is between 12 and 15 years.
