Getting to know the Bullmastiff

Origins & history

A story told

The Bullmastiff was created in the early 19th century to combat nocturnal poaching. British landowners sought to obtain through crosses between the Mastiff (large and heavy) and an old type of English Bulldog (fast and active, a dog suited to this use). It was then the dog of gamekeepers; it had to be capable of pinning a man to the ground and keeping him there pending orders. It was later used as a police dog.
