The Bulldog or English Bulldog is a dog breed of the mastiff type. The English Bulldog (literally, in English, "bull-dog") is a dog naturally finding its origin in Great Britain. Its appearance was favored by the development of a sport that appeared in the 13th century: combat between dog and bull designated in English as bullbaiting.

Origins & history
A story told
Following the prohibition of bullbaiting in 1835, the English Bulldog almost disappeared, until enthusiasts of this breed such as Bill George mobilized to save it. This was reworked so as to produce a balanced dog in character and behavior. Thus the feared fighter of the arenas that defied bulls becomes a dog low in aggression, a pet animal renowned instead for its temperament of low activity.
Character
Daily temperament
Bulldogs are rather calm by nature. They like to play and do not have much endurance. They are very sociable and demand a lot of affection. They are very loyal to their master and become attached very quickly. They do not appreciate high heat. In Canada, the English Bulldog is the 10th most popular dog breed between 2015 and 2020, according to the Canadian Kennel Club.
Physical
Breed standard
The English Bulldog is one of the most famous emblems of the United Kingdom. The drooping chops are a constituent feature of the main physical trait of this breed. Squat, short-legged with an imposing chest, the English Bulldog inspires strength and robustness at first glance. Its coat is short and fine. Its head is massive and the nose is flattened, the top sunk toward the eyes. Its muzzle is turned upward. The English Bulldog is also characterized by a prognathic jaw, the lower teeth protruding beyond the upper ones. The ears are generally small, high on the head and drooping. This animal is capable of great running acceleration; it is very little enduring. A smooth-coated dog, squat, rather close to the ground, wide, powerful, compact, its head is quite strong compared to the dog's size. Its face is short, the muzzle is wide, truncated and inclined upward. The body is short, well joined without tendency to obesity. The limbs are strong, well muscled, athletic. The hindquarters are high and strong, slightly lighter in comparison to the front, built with strength. The female is not as impressive or as developed as the male.

Health
Health watch
The breed is so prone to health problems that voices are raised against excesses of selection that have led to deleterious standards. Its resistance to effort and high temperatures is limited. Indeed, because of their flattened muzzle, they have difficulty breathing and are therefore not very enduring. The English Bulldog can have back problems. It is also a breed prone to tracheal hypoplasia.

Bulldogs sometimes have brachycephalic syndrome, an overly long soft palate and nostril stenosis, which requires corrective surgery. Beyond certain mating difficulties, delivery frequently poses problems due to the particular conformation of the puppies (large skull box) and the narrowness of the mother's pelvic canal. Cesarean section, essential for the survival of the puppies and mother, is thus performed in 80% of cases. After birth, the mother can sometimes, unintentionally, crush her puppies by lying down. Because of its genetics, the Bulldog often encounters joint difficulties, kidney stones and skin problems. Maintenance consists of regular brushing and daily cleaning of the ears and facial folds.
