Getting to know the Norwegian Buhund

Origins & history

A story told

The Norwegian Buhund is very common in Scandinavia in the Middle Ages, it was introduced in 874 by Norwegian colonizers to Iceland, where it was at the origin of all local breeds. Its name simply means herding (bu) dog (hund). Outside of Norway, the Norwegian Shepherd is today found in Great Britain and Australia.

Character

Daily temperament

The Norwegian Buhund is described in the FCI standard as a courageous, energetic, and friendly dog.

Physical

Breed standard

The Norwegian Buhund is a spitz-type dog, compact, of size slightly below average. The body is inscriptible in a square. The tail is carried firmly curled on the back. The wide head narrows sharply at the stop. The dark eyes are oval in shape. The ears are straight and pointed, carried firmly erect. The topcoat is thick, abundant, and hard, rather smooth and laid with a soft and thick undercoat. On the head and front part of the limbs, the coat is comparatively shorter. It is longer on the neck, chest, back of the thighs, and tail. Two colors are admitted by the standard:

Wheat (biscuit): this is a light beige to yellow-red; the color is frank and bright preferably. The coat can be charcoaled without influencing the base color. A mask is authorized. The coat should contain as little white as possible. Black. Preferably solid (without too much bronze discoloration).
