Chapter 1

Getting to know the Broholmer

Origins & history

A story told

The Broholmer has been known since the Middle Ages. It was then used for hunting, mainly for stag hunting, then it was subsequently used for the protection of properties and castles. Subsequently, at the end of the eighteenth century, it developed greatly, notably thanks to the Count of Sehested of Broholm. The latter gave the name to the breed. The breed almost disappeared after the Second World War, and it was not until 1975 that enthusiasts undertook its selection.

Character

Daily temperament

Very good guardian, the Broholmer is confident, but never aggressive to no avail. It is relatively calm, but it must have a garden available in which it can let off steam at will. This dog is affectionate and faithful to its masters.

Physical

Breed standard

A strong and muscular dog, the Broholmer is massive and large. It is powerful and its head is massive. This dog, of mastiff type, has a powerful and strong front. Its tail is wider at its base than at its tip and is attached low. Its skin is thick and somewhat loose, especially around the neck. The Broholmer can have as coat color tawny, often with a black mask, black, and golden red. White marks on various parts of the body are accepted. The Broholmer has a life expectancy of approximately 10 years.
