A story told
The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a smaller version of the Grand Griffon Vendéen. Kept by farmers in hunting parties of the early 20th century, it was then used for its hunting talents. The term briquet was given to it by Count Christian d'Elva before World War I. After World War II, the breed was revived in Fontenay-le-Comte from 1946. It is a very widespread breed among big game hunters. A pack of Briquet Griffon Vendéens won the French Cup for roe deer in 1995.

The FCI standard of the Briquet Griffon Vendéen describes the breed as knowing how to take initiative and being enduring. It is a determined and intelligent dog. The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a dog passionate about hunting, sometimes determined which requires good training. Never aggressive towards humans, it is a very patient breed with children. Very sociable with other dogs, it can live in a group. Its temperament makes it a good family dog provided it can exercise regularly and not live in the city which is strongly discouraged.

The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a medium-sized running griffon. The head and body are compact. The fairly light head shows parallel lines of the skull and muzzle. The fairly short skull is slightly domed with a well-marked stop. The eye is dark brown. The ears are supple, narrow and fine, are medium-long and turned inward. Attached high, the short tail is thick at birth and gradually tapers towards the tip. It is carried in a sabre shape. The coat is well-furnished, hard and rough without ever being woolly. The most common coat is white and orange. Other coats are white and black, black and tan, black and sand, tricolor, fawn grizzled, sand grizzled with or without white.
