Origins & history
A story told
The Saint-Germain Pointer was mainly used and improved by Charles X, although it seems King Louis XV already owned some. Indeed, one can see at the Louvre dogs "white and orange" painted during his reign that already resemble our present-day Saint Germains quite closely. The breed was created in the royal kennels of the Compiègne forest during the 1830s from a cross between French pointers and another variety of pointers, specifically an English female pointer. Charles X had charged his first huntsman with acquiring a pair of English pointers, called "Miss" and "Stop". Following the fall of the king, the dogs were entrusted to Nicolas, Baron de Larminat. Stop died shortly after. Larminat first had Miss bred by a German spaniel, but was not convinced by the litter. The baron tried again by having Miss bred by a French pointer named Zamore. From this were born seven puppies with white and orange coats with pink mucous membranes. The breed definitively took the name of Saint-Germain Pointer when the Compiègne kennel was transferred to the Saint-Germain-en-Laye forest. This breed was popular until the early twentieth century and was the most represented pointing dog at the first dog shows.
Character
Daily temperament
The Saint-Germain Pointer is described in the FCI standard as a very sociable, balanced, affectionate dog. Very easy to train, it does not tolerate being trained with brutality. Very close to humans, it appreciates family life. It is a problem-free dog, docile, very attached to its master, which must be handled with gentleness. It tolerates heat well and will tolerate city life provided it is regularly exercised.
Physical
Breed standard
The Saint-Germain Pointer is a medium-sized pointer of powerful and elegant appearance. The bone structure is fairly strong, the musculature adapted to work requiring endurance. The tail should not be docked and is carried horizontally in action. The eye is golden yellow, well set in the orbit with a sweet and frank expression. The coat is fawn and white in color, with no presence of black. The lips, nose, mucous membranes and palate must be pink or light orange.
