The Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer (Hungarian: drótszőrű magyar vizsla) is a dog breed originating from Hungary. It is a medium-sized pointing dog, with a wiry coat and wheat-golden (fawn) color. The German Wirehaired Pointer played a role in its development for its coat which suits the cold climate better. There is a short-haired variety, smaller in size, and considered a different breed: the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer

Origins & history

A story told

Of Hungarian origin, the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer is originally a dog of Hungarian nobility that would have followed the settlement of the Hungarian people. Its exact origin is not well defined: it would be the result of crossing with Hungarian hunting dogs, perhaps the Pannonian Hound or the short-legged Transylvanian, and a Turkish yellow dog. Documents describing dogs resembling the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer exist as early as the 14th century. Subjects of similar conformation are noted from the 17th century. At the end of the 19th century, pointing dog competitions are organized in Hungary in which the Hungarian Pointer participates and it is likely that foreign hunting dog breeds played a role in its development. The Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer was born in the 1930s from the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer and the German Wirehaired Pointer. The Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer is much better represented than the wirehaired breed. In 2011, under Viktor Orbán's government, a dog tax was adopted in Hungary from which the Hungarian Pointer is exempt on the grounds of being "of Hungarian race", in the sense of Greater Hungary.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer as attached to the master, easy to train, receptive and aware of its value. It does not tolerate being treated with brutality. It nevertheless needs firmness. It loves children and knows how to be the friend of the whole family. Although excellent companion dogs, the Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer is a hunting dog that needs a lot of exercise: life in an apartment requires several daily outings.

Physical

Breed standard

The Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer is a medium-sized pointing dog, of robust, dry build and without unnecessary weight. The length of the body exceeds the height at the withers only slightly and the height of the chest is slightly less than half the height at the withers. Attached at medium height, the tail is strong at its base and then gradually tapers. When tail docking is not prohibited by law, the tail can be shortened by a quarter. In motion it is raised to horizontal. The skull is moderately broad and slightly domed. The muzzle is slightly shorter than half the length of the head. The eyes are slightly oval in shape and medium in size. The eyelids fit well to the shape of the eyeball. The brown color of the eyes matches that of the coat, but darker shades are preferred. The ears are disposed slightly back and attached at medium height. They are drooping and the tip of the ear forms a rounded V. The ear is slightly shorter than that of the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer. The hair is "wire-like", well laid, strong, tight and dull. The guard hair measures 2 to 3 cm with a dense and water-impermeable undercoat. The body contours must not be masked by the longer coat. The hair is shorter, softer and slightly less tight in the lower regions of the limbs, under the chest and under the belly. On the head and ears, the hair is shorter and darker. Pronounced eyebrows and a beard as hard as possible without being too long give an energetic expression to the face. On the sides of the neck, the brush-like hair forms a "V". The coat is solid fawn, described as wheat-golden (semmelgelb). The ears may be a darker shade. A small white mark on the chest or in the throat region, whose diameter must not exceed 5 cm, and white marks on the fingers are not penalized.
