Chapter 1

Getting to know the Dupuy Pointer

Origins & history

A story told

The perfection of the out-of-sight hunting dog is probably a Celtic and more particularly Gallic tradition. The breed was created in Poitou in the 19th century by Omer and Narcisse Dupuy, by crossing Greyhounds and French Pointers. The breed was always rare and was not very well known outside France. It disappeared in its original form around the 1940s.

Character

Daily temperament

Thanks to its powerful sense of smell, this dog is useful for hunting. It scents game from a distance. Moreover, it is a dog resistant to bad weather such as heat. When hunting, it naturally takes the pace of the trot.

Physical

Breed standard

The Dupuy Pointer had a long tapered head and a generally refined appearance, reminiscent of a Greyhound; it was the largest of the French Pointer breeds, measuring 65 to 69 centimetres, it was predominantly white with dark brown markings and had an uncut tail. The coat is fine but is not shiny. The Dupuy Pointer also retains much of the English Pointer with which it was crossed.
