The Weimaraner is a dog breed originating from Germany with a gray coat, originally a hunting hound and later developed as a pointing dog. The name comes from the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar where the court of Charles Augustus appreciated its hunting qualities. The Weimaraner is a large pointing dog characterized by its gray coat color. It is a muscular, well-balanced and harmoniously proportioned pointer.

Getting to know the Weimaraner
Origins & history
A story told
A pointer with a gray-appearing coat has been known in Saxe-Weimar since the seventeenth century. Grand Duke Charles Augustus was the first to own and breed this predecessor of the Weimaraner, which is not a pointing dog but a hunting hound. It was used by the nobility of the Grand Duchy of Weimar to hunt wolves, lynxes, stags and wild boar, and also for the destruction of pests (foxes and wildcats). With the advent of firearms, the pointer became a pointing dog and used as such. From the 1890s onward, the breed was subject to planned and controlled breeding through registration in a stud book: crosses with other breeds were then avoided, making the Weimaraner the oldest German pointing breed. The long-haired variety was recognized in 1935.

During the interwar period, the Prince of Ratibor, president of the Austrian Club, also organized sled dog races with Weimaraners to prove their power and endurance. In France, the Circle of Friends of the Pointer was created in 1978. In 2011, according to the French stud book, there were 1,514 short-haired Weimaraner births registered in France for 38 long-haired pointers: it is the third most popular breed in group 7 ("Pointing Dogs") in number of births.

The Weimaraner is a versatile, docile, balanced hunting dog with a passion for hunting. It is a dog that is easily sociable. Exercise is fundamental for this dog as it is lively and needs to expend energy. In the city, frequent walks and sports activities are essential for it. It is also a dog that requires sufficient firmness. However, it is easy to channel it provided you are clear in your expectations. Very sociable with children, it is even very protective, but without any aggression.

For a dog to be considered of the breed, it must meet the breed standard. The Weimaraner standard for the Fédération Cynologique Internationale is number 99, it is part of group 7 containing pointing dogs. Corresponding to a standard is not sufficient for a dog to be said "of breed". It must also have been registered in the Stud Book of the country of birth, for example, the French stud book, and before the age of two, it must have been confirmed by a judge certifying the correspondence to the breed standard.
