Chapter 1

Getting to know the Auvergne Pointer

Origins & history

A story told

The Auvergne Pointer is probably the product of local selection from a common stock in all pointers. It is a dog originating from the Cantal region. Legend has it that the Auvergne Pointer was improved in France by the Hospitallers. The breed has been well-established for two centuries and was selected by hunters as a hunting dog. It was crossed with the black Pointer of Wales. Only a few dozen subjects remained after World War II, but since then the breed has recovered thanks to pointer infusions.

Character

Daily temperament

The Auvergne Pointer is described as gentle, very affectionate, intelligent and docile in the FCI standard. Training consists mainly of developing its natural qualities. Smell is powerful. He loves to share family life.
