Origins & history
A story told
The ancestors of the German Shorthaired Pointer would be gun dogs for net hunting and for hunting flying game in Mediterranean regions. These dogs reach the courts of German princes passing through France, Spain and Flanders. The first stud book, the Zuchtbuch Deutsch-Kurzhaar, opened in 1897 in Germany. Prince Albrecht of Solms-Braun established the first standard as well as the rules for work trials. The breed knew growth in France after the Second World War, the French club of the German Pointer was founded in 1958. The breed is the most known pointer in Germany and the most used gun dog in the world.
Character
Daily temperament
The FCI standard describes the German Shorthaired Pointer as firm, balanced, reliable, with contained reactions. It is neither nervous, nor shy, nor aggressive. The German Shorthaired Pointer loves to play with children, its great need for exercise makes it tolerate apartment life with difficulty, temperature and weather matter little to it. It is considered a good guardian. One must be careful because the jaw of the German Shorthaired Pointer is powerful.
Physical
Breed standard
The German Pointer is a well-proportioned dog, of athletic appearance, powerful and elegant. The length of the trunk should exceed the height at the shoulder only slightly. The tail is shortened about half for hunting in countries authorizing tail docking. At rest, it is pendant and is carried horizontally in action. The eyes are dark brown, neither sunken in the sockets, nor protruding. Its weight is 28 to 32 kilograms (61.5 to 70.5 pounds) for the male, and 27 to 31.5 kilograms (59.5 to 69.5 pounds) for the female. The truffle is brown, except for the black coat. The ears are medium-long, rounded at the end and pressed against the cheeks. The coat is tight and shiny, the accepted colors are brown with or without marking, dark brown or light brown roan, white with brown markings on the head, and plates or brown speckles, black.
