Chapter 1

Getting to know the Brachet tyrolien

Origins & history

A story told

The Tyrolean Hound would be a descendant of the Celtic Scent Hound. In the 16th century, Emperor Maximilian I used hounds in Tyrol. Hunting books from that period describe their use as bloodhounds. Selection in pure breed begins in the 1860s in Tyrol. Among the many varieties of Tyrolean Hounds, only the fawn and black and tan colors survived. The first standard was written in 1896 and the breed was officially recognized in 1908. In 1944, the small-sized Tyrolean Hound was removed from the standard.

Character

Daily temperament

The Tyrolean Hound is described by the FCI standard as a balanced dog. It is a dog passionate about hunting, enduring and confident. At home, the Tyrolean Hound is gentle and friendly.

Physical

Breed standard

The Tyrolean Hound is a medium-sized scent hound, strong, muscular, nervous, robust and healthy, with long and harmonious lines. The body is a little longer than high, with a well-pronounced withers and a rounded chest. The very well-descended chest is moderately wide, while the belly is slightly raised. The neck is dry and without dewlap. Attached high, the long tail reaches at least the point of the hock. In action, it is carried high. The saber-shaped curve is permitted. The head is wide with a slightly domed skull and a marked stop. The muzzle is straight with short lips. The eyes are round and dark brown in color. The large ears are attached high, rounded at their tips. The coat is double, dense, rather coarse than fine. It forms knickers on the thighs and the tail is well supplied with bristly hair. Two coat colors are admitted: fawn and black and tan. Fawn includes all shades of red, red deer or red-yellow. A too light yellow color is not sought. Black and tan is provided with a black coat with red tan markings on the limbs, chest, belly and head. For both color varieties, white markings are admissible at the collar, chest and in the sternal region, on the feet and limbs.
