Getting to know the Black and Tan Brachet

Origins & history

A story told

The Black and Tan Hound is considered by the breed's promoters to be a descendant of the Celtic Hound. The origins of the breed are only certain from the middle of the 19th century.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Black and Tan Hound as of pleasant character. It is an attentive dog, which feels the emotional state of its master in particular, lively, reserved without being timid.

Physical

Breed standard

The Black and Tan Hound is a medium-sized scent hound, of solid and elongated construction. The long tail gradually tapers. It is carried slightly curved in action and hanging at rest. The underside forms a rough-hair bump not too hard. The wide skull shows a weakly marked occipital region. The eyes are dark brown in color, without visible conjunctiva at the angle of the eye. Of medium length, the medium-width ears are attached high and round toward the tip. Of approximately two centimeters in length, the coat is smooth, well laid, dense, tight, with a silky sheen. The color is black with clearly defined tan markings of light to dark fawn color. Two tan markings frame the eyes.
