Getting to know the Styrian Coarse-haired Hound

Origins & history

A story told

In 1870, industrialist Carl Peitinger began the selection of the Styrian Hound by crossing Hela I, a bitch of red Hanover Hound, with a coarse-haired Istrian Scenthound.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the breed as passionate about hunting and self-assured. It is a confident dog, willing to work and very devoted to its master.

Physical

Breed standard

The Styrian Coarse-haired Hound is a medium-sized scenthound with solid musculature. The tail of medium length is strong at the root and carried upward slightly saber-shaped. The underside is in brush, but without plumage. The slightly arched skull is endowed with a well-developed occipital bone and a marked stop. The not-too-large ears fall flat against the cheeks and are covered with fine hair. The eyes are brown. The coat is hard and rough. It is shorter on the head and forms a moustache. The colors of the coat are red and pale yellow. A white star on the chest is admitted.
