Chapter 1

Getting to know the German Hound

Origins & history

A story told

Many varieties of Brackes existed historically in Germany, but in the 19th century, only the Westphalian Bracke and the Tricolor Bracke of Sauerland remained. These Brackes were crossed with local scent hounds to create a homogeneous type in 1900, the German Bracke. Fairly widespread in Germany, the German Bracke is a rare breed outside its country of origin.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard does not describe typical character or temperament for the breed. At home, it is a gentle and friendly dog.

Physical

Breed standard

The German Bracke is a small-sized scent hound, with a light, tall and elegant appearance, while combining solid construction. As protection against injuries caused by logs and branches, the tail is well furnished with long and bushy hair, which forms a brush, giving it a fairly thick and heavy appearance compared to the body. It is carried drooping or gently curved upward. The relatively light head appears narrow and elongated from the front. The skull is slightly wider than the cheeks, it is slightly domed, with a poorly marked occipital protuberance. The eyes are dark, clear and give it a gentle expression. The ears are long (about 14 cm) and wide (about 9 cm). They fall well against the head and form a rounding at the end. For a short-haired dog, the hair is considered fairly long. It is described as very dense, hard. The belly is well furnished with dense hair and the thighs have good britches. The color of the coat is tricolor, ranging from red to fawn, with a black saddle or mantle and white markings forming a continuous line, a white muzzle with a full collar preferably, a white chest, markings on the limbs and at the tip of the tail.
