The Bouvier des Flandres is a dog breed that belongs to the large family of Boviers, of Franco-Belgian origin, he accompanied, at the beginning of the century, the "cattle drivers," leading the large herds during the day during their movements to fairs or pastures and protecting them at night against predators of all kinds. It was also heavily used by the army during the last two world wars. Today, the Bouvier des Flandres is the alert protector of the family, its pleasant life companion.

The breed was not recognized until 1912. After World War I, it was necessary to rebuild the herd, which was largely decimated during the occupation of Flanders. In 1960, an agreement between Belgian breeders allowed the criteria of the breed to be permanently established. Besides uncommon physical strength, this dog possesses qualities of intelligence that allow it to serve as a guard dog, defense and police dog, and tracking dog.

Character
Daily temperament
He is a very loyal dog, very attached both to his master and to the rest of the family. He likes to be taken care of a lot. He is resistant, always on alert and courageous, with equal behavior. Intelligent, he likes to work and shows sensitivity. He is generally a social animal that, provided he has been accustomed from a young age to the presence of cats, will get along well with them and his peers. With children, he generally forms a good association. He looks at strangers with suspicion and is very protective of his family, his loyalty is reputed. He needs a well-balanced education that remains consistent in its principles. Less lively than the German Shepherd, the Bouvier des Flandres nevertheless learns new commands relatively quickly, and once the thing is acquired, he will remember it for a long time. He needs moderate physical activity and will appreciate long walks or a gentle trot. Regular brushing is recommended for his coat, but although he has relatively long hair, it does not tend to become tangled. Hair loss is done by clumps of hair rather than by scattered hair.
